‘Slow Medicine’ at GetzWell: Part 2

In our last post, we introduced you to the wonders of Slow Medicine and how it relates to the mindful and personalized care we deliver at GetzWell. In this second installment, we’d like to expand the conversation by highlighting a point of view espoused by GetzWell and other Slow Medicine practitioners.

Avoiding environmental pollutants during (and before!) breastfeeding

At GetzWell we hold that, whenever possible, breastfeeding is the absolute best way to feed your baby.

With the many benefits to your child’s cognitive development, immune system, gut health, and bonding, the protective and health promoting properties of breastmilk are nothing short of amazing! At the same time, the reality of our modern world means that pollutants that contaminate our bodies on a daily basis can be passed on to our little ones. Breasts absorb and store chemicals in their fatty tissue, some of which is transferred during milk production. The presence of toxins is higher in first-time moms and during the first months of breastfeeding, so it is never too early to limit your exposure.

Tylenol’s Dark Side Just Got Darker

You may remember an older post related to Tylenol’s serious health effects in children: Tylenol’s Dark Side. Now a new study has revealed that mothers who consumed acetaminophen (Tylenol) during pregnancy have a greater risk of their children being diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and requiring ADHD medications later on in life.

Vitamins: The Essential Truth

We all know that vitamins and minerals contribute importantly to our overall health. However, according to Mark Hyman, M.D. who is the author of The UltraMind Solution and several other NY Times best sellers, more than 92% of American’s are deficient in one or more vitamins (based on 2012 NHANES data). Obviously we’re not getting what we need from our food. So should we take a multivitamin, or does that just contribute to expensive pee?

The Beauty of Bacteria and Your Baby’s Health

We are all are teeming with natural gut bacteria (a.k.a. gut flora) that have myriad functions including facilitating digestion and safeguarding against harmful diseases and allergies. In fact, nearly 75-80% of immune function originates in the gastrointestinal tract.

In this post we’ll give you the inside scoop on the inner workings of good gut health and helpful tips on keeping your child’s intestinal tract in tiptop shape.

Tylenol’s Dark Side — Not to be Taken Lightly

New research provides additional evidence of Tylenol’s (or acetaminophen’s) dark side. A recent study shows acetaminophen may be implicated in the significant upsurge in pediatric asthma diagnoses since the 1980s when Tylenol began to be used more frequently (in place of aspirin). The most likely mechanism is depletion of glutathione in the airways.
