Now that spring is in full swing, we’d like to share some helpful tips and resources for making your home “green” clean and toxic-free.
1. DIY solutions.
You can make safe, cost-effective, and earth-friendly concoctions for virtually any household need, including laundry detergents, air fresheners, grout cleaners, etc.
This helpful article from Apartment Therapy offers 25 DIY Green Cleaning Recipes for the Whole House, and provides the following shopping list of the basic ingredients you’ll need:
– Baking Soda
– Borax
– Castile soap (like Dr. Bronner’s)
– Essential oils (ex: tea tree, lavender, eucalyptus, lemongrass)
– Fresh herbs, citrus, or citrus peels
– Hydrogen peroxide
– Olive or vegetable oil
– Water
– White Vinegar
One of our favorites is this very simple 3-ingredient recipe for an all-purpose green cleaner:
– 2 cups Water
– 1 cup Hydrogen Peroxide
– ¼ cup Lemon Juice
It’s just that simple.
2. Go with green cleaning alternatives.
If making your own cleaning solutions isn’t your thing, there are many safe alternatives available to you.
One example is San Francisco-based Green11, which offers eco-conscious cleaning products from Biokleen, Earth Friendly Products, and Zum. What makes Green11 extra special is the ability for customers to refill their cleaning supplies using containers they already own, thus not contributing further to landfill.
Shaklee is another great green resource, whose line of hydrogen peroxide-based cleaners are safe and affordable. We recommend their Basic H2® Organic Super Cleaning Concentrate.
3. Do your homework!
Should you consider buying synthetic cleaning products, we advise you to research the potential toxic dangers they pose.
A great source to consult is the Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) Guide to Healthy Cleaning, which is a database of over 2,000 popular cleaning products and provides grades for each based on their hazardous ingredients, potential health risks, and integrity of product labels.
