Fun Ideas for a Happy and Healthy Summer

With summer well underway, we thought you could use some fun and affordable ideas to keep your kids entertained. Here are some of our favorite recipes, deals, activities, and crafts to help you and your family make the most of this special season.

1. Make homemade organic popsicles.

Summer wouldn’t be summer without a few sweet treats. Popsicles are very easy to make and are also healthy when made with organic ingredients. Check out this Homemade Popsicle “How-To” from Epicurous.com for easy-to-follow tips and unique flavor combinations.

We also recommend this super simple Berry Yogurt Pops recipe from Trader Joe’s.  Layers of blended organic strawberries, blueberries, and yogurt – your kids will be very happy campers.

2. Plan the perfect kid-friendly picnic

Who doesn’t love a picnic? Get outside with your little ones and enjoy healthy snacks on a sunny day. You don’t have to go far. Venture to your nearest park, or spread a blanket out in your backyard. Just don’t forget the safe sun block!

Here’s a handy guide from Parents.com to help you plan the perfect picnic for your family. Creative and healthy snack ideas include “sandwich bouquets,” “melon swizzlers” and “ABC Pasta Salad.”

3.  Get creative with DIY kid crafts

Homemade crafts are great for exerting some creative energy during the summer months. Here are 16 excellent kid-friendly art and garden projects courtesy of AllYou.com. A few of our favorites include:

We also love these fun and easy ideas for transforming leftover picnic supplies – plates, cups, napkins – into cute and colorful works of art. Using household items means more fun for less money, and less waste too.

4. Take family field trips for FREE

Many museums, zoos, science centers, and the like, offer free admission to residents on select days by week or month. There are often free days for institutions and organizations throughout the Bay Area, including the Bay Area Discovery Museum, California Academy of Sciences, Children’s Creativity Museum, and more.

These educational excursions get you and your family out of the house without breaking the bank, and keep your child’s mind and body active and engaged.
