Customized Vaccination Schedules – We offer customized vaccine schedules. Whether you choose to immunize on a conventional or alternative schedule, GetzWell Pediatrics is prepared to meet all of your child’s vaccine needs. We support childhood vaccination. However, we acknowledge that childhood immunization is one of the first major health related decisions that parents make for their children and should be carefully considered. We respect our families’ wishes to discuss vaccines and their concerns openly, and we can provide in depth consultations upon request. For an extra fee, GetzWell pediatricians will provide vaccine only consultations to non members of the practice.

Board certified pediatricians – The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) (www.abms.org) is an umbrella organization that awards 24 specialty certifications through individual medical boards for each specialty. Specialty boards have been approved jointly by the ABMS and the American Medical Association Council on Medical Education (AMA/CME) since 1933. Pediatricians are subject to review and certification by the American Board of Pediatrics (www.abp.org). All of the doctors at GetzWell Pediatrics are board certified pediatricians.

Board certification in all specialties must be renewed periodically and signifies a physician’s commitment and expertise in consistently achieving superior clinical outcomes in a responsive, patient-focused setting. Patients, physicians, healthcare providers, insurers and quality organizations look for board certification in the different specialties as the best measure of a physician’s knowledge, experience and skills to provide quality healthcare within a given specialty.

Complementary and alternative healing modalities – Complementary and alternative therapies follow these basic principles: (1) complementary and alternative therapies are based on the body’s innate ability to heal itself, (2) complementary and alternative medicine does not rely on prescription drugs, surgery, and other conventional medical procedures, however, these options and their potential benefits are not discounted either; (3) complementary and alternative medicine looks at the underlying cause of the problem and addresses the whole person (mind, body, emotions, spirit) without just masking the symptoms; and (4) the goal is to create optimum health by focusing on preventing disease and helping patients feel the best they can as much as treating disease.

Coordination of Hospital and Specialist Care – When children in our practice require specialty care or need hospitalization, our pediatricians will coordinate such services. We have excellent relationships with some of the best pediatric specialists in the Bay Area, and we strive to seamlessly transition your child into their capable hands. We refer to and collaborate with most major hospital systems including California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC), Children’s Hospital Oakland, UCSF, Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital (Stanford) and St. Luke’s Hospital. Moreover, once a child is hospitalized we provide a communication bridge between hospital teams and our families.

Counseling Home Visits for New Parents – Sharon Epel, an experienced licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT) and mother of two, offers house calls for new parents. Sharon provides education, support, and counseling in the comfort of your home to help with the emotional and physical demands of caring for a new baby. Sessions can address bonding, adjustment, anxiety, and help identify post partum depression. Home visits may aid in increasing parents’ confidence and joy in their new roles and smooth the transition to becoming a family.

Functional medicine – Functional medicine represents an evolution in the practice of medicine that better addresses the healthcare needs of the 21st century. By shifting the traditional disease centered focus of medical practice to a more patient centered approach, functional medicine addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms. Functional medicine practitioners are often medical doctors (MDs) that were educated and trained as conventional Western medicine physicians, but who have elected to expand their practices by spending extra time with their patients, listening to their histories and looking at the interactions among genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that can influence long term health and complex, chronic disease. In this way, functional medicine supports the unique expression of health and vitality for each individual. Functional medicine focuses on wellness and health optimization through nutrition, diet, homeopathy, acupuncture and exercise, use of the latest laboratory testing and other diagnostic techniques, and combinations of drugs and/or botanical medicines, supplements, therapeutic diets, detoxification programs, or stress-management techniques.

Infant Massage in Your Home or the Office – Infant massage is a way to promote well being, nurture the growth and development of your baby’s body, mind and spirit, and enhance bonding and attachment with your infant. In addition, it may also relieve complaints of colic and constipation as well as respiratory disorders and sleeping difficulties. GetzWell’s Nicole Mitchell offers parents instruction in infant massage. She does this in our modern office or in the comfort of your home.

Integrative medicine – Integrative medicine blends the best of conventional, complementary and alternative medical approaches, addressing not only physical symptoms, but also psychological, social, environmental and spiritual aspects of health and illness. It believes in stimulating the innate human capacity for healing, empowering patients in their own care, while providing them with choices in healthcare that are proven to be safe and effective.

Medical Consultations – At GetzWell Pediatrics we believe in treating the whole person, not just symptoms in isolation, and this is the core of a functional approach to medical care. We take the time to listen to and understand our patients’ histories while acknowledging the complex interaction of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that influence long term health and often underlie chronic illness. This approach recognizes the uniqueness of each person and represents a new map for dealing with complex chronic illness and its prevention. We deliver individually tailored therapies designed to restore health and optimize wellness. The conditions we treat include (but are not limited to) ADD/ADHD, autoimmune disease, acne, diabetes, depression/anxiety and other mood disorders, eczema and other skin ailments, gastrointestinal disorders such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, and celiac/gluten sensitivity. We also provide consultations related to improving immune function over all.

*Before your Chronic Illness consult at GetzWell, we request that you provide us with your child’s complete medical record, including labs, imaging, and consult notes from other physicians. We may also ask you to sign a release so that we can discuss your child’s case with previous or collaborating providers.

Newborn House Calls – Transitioning to your role as new parent can be both exciting and daunting. In order to help your family ease into its new rhythms, GetzWell Pediatrics offers newborn house calls* within 2 – 3 days of your child’s birth. House calls allow our board certified pediatricians to spend unhurried time (usually 75 minutes) to complete a thorough history and exam, assist with breastfeeding, answer questions and begin the education process that is at the heart of our integrative medicine approach, all in the comfort of your home.

*House Calls are only available in San Francisco.

Routine wellness exams allow us to monitor your child’s growth and development and to cultivate a partnership designed to optimize your child’s health within an integrative framework. Whether you choose to immunize on a conventional or alternative schedule, GetzWell Pediatrics is prepared to meet all of your child’s vaccine needs. We support childhood vaccination. Screening for Developmental Delay – At GetzWell Pediatrics, all members receive a formal developmental screening at the 18 month routine check up. We also complete informal screenings at each of the well child visits in order to assure your child is developing normally. We are happy to provide formal screening at any other time upon request or if otherwise indicated and welcome screening only visits for non members. Some of the developmental assessment tools we use at GetzWell are Ages and Stages Questionnaire, M-CHAT, Child Behavior Checklist, Pediatric Symptom Checklist and Sensory Profile. When appropriate, we will coordinate care and make referrals to specialists for more in depth evaluations.

Sick Visits – In most cases, GetzWell Pediatrics can accommodate same day appointments for urgent and sick visits. Should your child need assistance after hours or on the weekend, your Open Access membership gives you direct telephone access to one of our professionals. For an extra fee, non members may be accommodated for acute visits based on appointment availability at the time.

Unrushed Office Visits – Our office visits are unrushed. This allows us to cultivate relationships with families and partner with parents in helping them raise healthy, happy children. We believe that spending quality time with our patients (approximately 30-45 minutes per visit) is the bedrock of an integrative medicine approach versus a traditional Western medicine approach in which 10 – 15 minutes is typical. We view each patient encounter is an opportunity to educate parents about preventive health and integrative care.

Western Medicine – Western or allopathic medicine is recognized in the United States as mainstream or conventional medicine, as opposed to alternative and complementary medicine. Western medicine is the educational approach followed by the vast majority of American medical schools and residency programs.
